Krill Oil Soft Gel Supplements

What is Krill Oil

Krill are shrimp-like crustaceans that are approximately 1 to 6 centimeters long. Krill inhabit the cold ocean areas of the world, primarily the Antarctic and North Pacific Oceans. Despite their small size, krill make up the largest animal biomass on the planet. According to Neptune Technologies, the Canadian company that holds the patent for krill oil extraction, there are approximately 500 million tons of krill roaming around in these northern seas, 110,000 tons of which are harvested annually. They’re near the bottom of the food chain and are eaten by whales, seals, penguins, squid and fish.

The oil that is found naturally in krill, is extracted and sold as a nutritional supplement. Krill oil contains high concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids , which is the main reason that it is growing in popularity as a nutritional supplement. Another reason is because it contains a potent antioxidant called astaxanthin, the bright red pigment that results from the algae that krill eat, which is what gives krill and other crustaceans, such as lobsters and shrimp, their reddish-pink color. Antioxidants protect our body cells from damage from free radicals–unstable substances that are thought to contribute to certain chronic diseases. Unlike many other antioxidants, astaxanthin crosses the blood-brain barrier, where theoretically it could protect the eyes, brain and central nervous system from free radical damage. And unlike other sources of omega 3’s, Krill Oil is recognized and easily assimilated by our bodies due to its similarity to our brain’s own phospholipids.

Krill oil, like fish oil, contains both of the omega-3 fats eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA), but linked together in a different form. In fish oil these omega-3 fatty acids are found in the triglyceride form whereas in krill oil they are linked up in a double chain phospholipid structure–the same structure as the fats found in our own cell walls. Attached to the EPA leg of the phospholipid is a molecule of astaxanthin, an extremely potent antioxidant, which is found in higher concentrations than in fish oils. The phospholipid structure of the EPA and DHA in krill oil makes them much more absorbable and allows for a much easier entrance into the mitochondria and the cellular nucleus. In addition to EPA and DHA, krill oil also contains a complex phospholipid profile including phosphatidylcholine, a potent source of stress-reducing choline. Due to the rapid absorption and the high anti-oxidant content of Krill Oil, it does not cause fish burps, reflux or leave an aftertaste, which are all common side effects of fish oil. The fact is that very few side effects have been reported from taking Krill Oil soft gels.

Krill Oil and Cholesterol

Krill oil is being studied as a natural remedy for high cholesterol. A number of studies have shown that Krill Oil is tremendously effective in reducing LDL-cholesterol, raising HDL-cholesterol. In one study, 120 people were given krill oil, fish oil or a placebo. Krill oil reduced LDL (commonly referred to as “bad”) cholesterol by 34% and increased HDL (“good”) cholesterol by 43.5% compared to the placebo. In comparison, fish oil reduced LDL cholesterol by 4.6% and increased HDL cholesterol by 4.2%. Krill also lowered triglycerides. Looking at the research on Neptune Krill Oil and cholesterol, you can see how effective Neptune Krill Oil is at reducing high cholesterol levels. Krill Oil may also reduce your risk for coronary heart disease.

Research on Krill Oil and cholesterol revealed that as little as 500 mg per day may reduce high cholesterol levels by 19% and lower triglyceride levels up to 25%. And taking 3 grams per day of Krill Oil may increase healthy lipid levels (HDL) by up to 60%. Researchers concluded that 500 mg – 3 grams per day of Neptune Krill Oil may reduce high cholesterol, manage glucose, triglycerides, HDL, and LDL levels.

Study Results of Neptune Krill Oil:

  • Reduced high cholesterol levels
  • Lowered LDL (unhealthy cholesterol)
  • Lowered triglyceride levels
  • Increased HDL (healthy cholesterol)
  • May be more effective than fish oils for managing high lipid levels in the blood.
  • Surpassed fish oils for a greater reduction in LDL (the bad cholesterol).
  • The lower maintenance dose of 500 mg. of Neptune Krill Oil showed more noticeable health benefits compared to fish oils and placebo.
